Inscription is the process of imbuing an item or being with the power of Runes. Unlike a magical item made through Crafting, inscriptions are always temporary and have an expiration date, usually the end of the next event.
Any given item or being can be inscribed but can only bear one inscription at a time. To perform an inscription, you must be able to cast the runes that you are inscribing. Multiple people can each contribute runes to a single inscription however.
To perform an inscription you must:
- Choose the object you are inscribing.
- Choose which runes you are inscribing it with.
- Choose what benefit/ability you (ideally) want the inscription to give.
- Pay a basic material per rune inscribed that matches the element of the rune (i.e. if you were inscribing Dagaz, a FLAME Rune, you would need to spend a single portion of Fire), inscribing Hagalaz as itself requires any basic material of your choice. You can optionally add extra materials to potentially produce a stronger effect.
- Optionally cast a rune of Creation
- Optionally add essence of your own material to the creation. This will cause at least one wound.
When you inscribe an item, the Refs will write you a card for it. Inscriptions will have a concealed reverse side, which you must read when you use it for the first time.
It's possible to contribute a different effect to an inscription than you're claiming to, provided it still plausibly matches the runes you're contributing. If a contributor wishes to subvert the effect they're adding to the inscription, they can speak to a Norn before the roleplay and detail what they're actually trying to achieve.
Guidance and assistance on performing an inscription would be best sought from the Gods who own the runes you are trying to inscribe but they're all rather busy and most of them are about to sleep for Fimbulwinter.
